Real food for long training days

We’re proud to be the title sponsor of the Crafty Weka Challenge Wānaka Multi, bringing together kayaking, mountain biking and trail running in Wānaka’s spectacular outdoors. It’s a natural fit for a brand that loves real food and big adventures.

With three sports to prepare for, training days can be long and varied. Long rides, trail runs and multisport sessions take preparation. Alongside your gear and route, there’s another question worth asking: what are you going to eat? Packing food you enjoy and have practised eating is part of that preparation.

At Crafty Weka, we pride ourselves in creating real food snacks that provide sustained energy for those long training and race days.

But how do the flavours compare, and where might they fit into your training day?

Meet the flavours

Our bars bring several sources of energy together: carbohydrate from ingredients such as dried fruit, honey, coconut sugar and oats or quinoa; alongside fats and protein from nuts and seeds. Each large bar also provides 5.0–6.8g of fibre.

Original

Our classic combination of oats, peanuts, currants and sesame seeds, with pumpkin and sunflower seeds, mānuka blend honey and cinnamon. A familiar favourite for your snack kit.

Date & Orange

Based on a Date & Orange scone! Dates and orange peel join oats, peanuts and black sesame seeds for a fruity flavour with a citrus twist.

Cacao & Hemp

Oats, dates, peanuts and seeds meet cacao and hemp seeds. This flavour has the most protein and fibre per large bar in this comparison, with 10.4g protein and 6.8g fibre.

Berry Berry

Cranberries, currants, dates, raspberry and beetroot combine with oats and seeds. At 34.5g carbohydrate per large bar, it has the most carbohydrate of the six flavours compared here. It's also a nut-free recipe.

Nutty Caramel, gluten free

Cashews, peanuts and almonds make up the nut mix, alongside seeds, dates, puffed quinoa and cinnamon. A flavour to consider if you enjoy a nutty snack and need a gluten-free option.

Almond & Cacao, gluten free

Almonds and cacao join sesame, sunflower, pumpkin and ground linseed, with dates and puffed quinoa. Another gluten-free option, with a cacao flavour and a generous mix of seeds.

Find what works for your session

Carbohydrate is an important part of fuelling endurance exercise. Your food choices also need to suit the length and intensity of the session, your opportunities to eat and your stomach. Australian Institute of Sport fuelling guidance.

Crafty Weka bars contain a mix of carbohydrate, fat, protein and fibre. Consider that whole mix when choosing where they fit into your day, whether that’s a snack between sessions, a stop on a long adventure or part of a fuelling plan you’ve practised.

The energy figure alone doesn’t tell you how much carbohydrate a bar provides. For example, Original and Cacao & Hemp both contain 1,500kJ, but provide 29.8g and 26.8g carbohydrate respectively.

Give your snack kit a training run

Before race day, practise with the foods you plan to carry. Test the portion, timing and how comfortably you can eat while moving. Check that your snacks are easy to reach and open, too. Training is the time to find a fuelling plan that suits you.

Try a few flavours, read the panel and build your snack kit around the day ahead.

Check individual packaging for ingredients and allergens. The range includes oats, peanuts, tree nuts and sesame, depending on the recipe.
